Who says romance novels are only for women?

In his novel "Surface Paradise," author Allan Green tells the story of Michael Sykes, a restless Harvard graduate who finds love and loss in Queensland, Australia, in the 1950s. Michael, a young "playboy" born into privilege, wrestles with the expectations his widowed mother holds for him while struggling to comply with societal norms.

In 1955, Green traveled to Australia by boat from London on a 35-day voyage. His love affair with Australia flourished during his stay, and later served as his inspiration to pen "Surface Paradise" in 1959.

"I include a guide to Australian slang in my book so that readers can fully immerse themselves in Aussie culture and come to love it as much as I did," Green said.

Through his novel, Green spotlights the challenges young men face while searching for their place in the world, as well as their quest to find the perfect girl to accompany them.

"I hope Michael's life and growth will deeply move readers, " Green said. "The path to contentment is not always a straight one, but the journey is worth it in the end."

About the author
Allan Green has a master's and doctorate degree from Rutgers University. He is a world traveler, and has also attended school in England and Ireland. Green published his first novel, "Soldier Boy," in 2013. He is a retired college professor and currently resides in New Jersey.
