While leading a project one day, a realization hit author and humorist Alan E. Waite; the kind that inspired him to write this delightful story, unveiling true coming-of-age stories of "Baby Boom" children growing up in the aftermath of the Second World War.
"HATS" takes readers in an unforgettable journey into the minds of young boomers in early to late childhood; showing what their world was like nearly three quarters of a century ago, how they wrestled with it, and what values they embraced.
"Coming of age in what might have been the last American era involved following a central social construct - to be a person of strong character. This construct was not only taught but insisted upon and modeled. It was a time where diversity was celebrated as long as it centered on the fundamental ideas that made up the American character - integrity, honesty, hard work, faith, love of freedom, and civility."
Waite's childhood adventures as described in this book give him a ring-side seat for observing and commenting upon modern American behavior, adding a depth of understanding about how various generations of Americans struggle with personal ethics and search for integrity - with storytelling that has, as one reader observed, "a Mark Twain quality to it."
With a mixture of humor, warmth, nostalgia, a dash of painful honesty, and a touch of political incorrectness, "HATS" showcases a collection of provocative and entertaining small-town America coming-of-age stories that center on the eternal ideas of truth, honesty, and compassion. These are stories of a time gone by, stories from what some see as the American golden age, but most of all, stories that resonate today because they are about what people of all eras and ages face - the lifelong challenge of being a person of integrity.
