For many, retirement is a time when life seems to slow down; with fewer responsibilities, retirees are able to travel, spend time with family, or do other things they've always wanted to do. Alan Rose's memoir "Sex and Alcohol in Retirement" (published by Trafford Publishing) records his experiences after retirement, when his life did anything but slow down.
Rose's book is divided into two parts: the first part deals with his work with a clinic that allowed parents to choose the sex of their fetus. It shows Rose's dedication to science, and also his fight against both people and the British Parliament to keep his clinic open.
An excerpt from "Sex and Alcohol in Retirement":
"When I retired from the National Health Service at the at the age of 65 in 1990 I expected to have little professional work to do. Having been a Chemical Pathologist for 25 years and in charge of both a routine and research laboratory I would be unable to function in the private field without a large laboratory at my disposal and this was clearly impossible. True I had a small medicolegal practice in the drink-driving field but I thought that this would gradually dwindle away as news of my retirement spread.
How different was the way things turned out."
The second part of "Sex and Alcohol in Retirement" explores Rose's time as an expert witness in many drunk-driving cases.
