Author Alan Cvancara outlines the beauty and usefulness of wildflowers in his new book, "Wildflower Personalities."
In the book, Cvancara provides detailed illustrations of 27 species of wildflowers, including recommended therapies and a pronunciation guide, for current and aspiring enthusiasts. Cvancara, a professor emeritus of geology, has both a professional and personal interest in educating the public about these wildflowers.
"As a professor, I've always been interested in using the scientific method to explore and understand these flowers," Cvancara says. "Personally, I enjoy taking novices on nature walks, telling them stories and showing illustrations to teach the intricacies of wildflowers."
Simply put, the book is an intimate introduction to 27 wildflowers in 17 families, selected to showcase floral personalities and architecture. An illustrated flower portrait as well as a single-page essay and haiku that encapsulate the essence of the flower accompany every entry.
The book also comes with an illustrated glossary as well as blurbs on wildflower therapy and creating wildflower portraits.
"The book scientifically, artistically and spiritually celebrates every aspect of these flowers," Cvancara says. "Such intimacy gives a true understanding of what makes up a flower and reveals nature's beauty.
"I hope this introduction provides such acquaintance with wildflowers so that they are allowed greater protection."
