"Authentic Strengths" is a book about coaching yourself - or others - by using naturally strong traits within you, instead of "fixing what's wrong." Author Fatima Doman spent 20 years teaching Franklin Covey's renowned "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" workshops, and now uses positive psychology to help people silence their inner critic and discover their inner coach. She forged a pathway to a happier life for herself and others through the principles she now teaches.
Using a combination of the neuroscience of optimism and the universal "24 character strengths" that each person possesses, Authentic Strengths focuses on combining a person's innate strengths with their natural style. Fatima even challenged herself to use her own training to become closer with her mother.
As a refugee from Angola's War of Independence, Fatima Doman's family fled a comfortable life to subsist within a blue-collar safety offered in the United States. The change in social and economic status was demoralizing for both of her parents and growing up optimistic in that environment proved a challenge.
After the untimely death of her brother, Doman was hesitant to spend extra time with her mother, whose low spirits and waning health were painful to witness. Determined to reframe her view of her mother, Doman gradually found a way to let go of her past and focus on positives characteristics in her mother: strong spirituality, love of learning, generosity toward the hungry, and appreciation of nature. In contrast to her notion of her mother being gloomy, she was one day amazed to encounter her feeding a squirrel out of her hand, like Snow White.
Gradually, Doman reframed the dark regrets of her childhood into a more hopeful tale through a focus on character strengths. Her new book, Authentic Strengths, will be released on May 10th, 2016-her mother's birthday.
