During the 1960's the Justice system was quite different. Those days were a perfect time to change the status quo and to be proactive at the same time. Recent law school graduates were seeking ways to make a difference. All things were open to question including the rights of the disadvantaged, women and sexual mores. The author David Lafaille was a witness and participant of that era. In "At The Edge of Reason" he attempts to give readers a taste of the magic and conflict of that Era.

This highly engrossing read follows the lives of two young and idealistic men, Denny Martel and Jack Hansen. These two men have been friends since High School and have always been close despite taking very different careers. Denny is an up and coming public defender while Jack is a promising LAPD detective on the trail of serial killer Alvin Canby dubbed the "Night Slayer" by the press, whose murder spree is about to destabilize LA. This book follows their lives as they wade through the dark and dangerous waters of the era's justice system. This eye-opening book shows the reader the great strength it takes to hold on to one's convictions despite the many obstacles one faces. The dialogue and the settings in the story are very authentic due to the author's firsthand experience as a lawyer during the 60's, and gives the reader a sense of having experienced the sheer idealism of an era.

This book examines themes like spirituality, idealism, sexuality, individuality and equality. "At The Edge of Reason" tells of one man's attempt to level the playing field one person at a time in an arena where the mechanistic approach to justice dominates.
