FALLON, Nev.

Author Barbara Williamson, with Nancy Bacon, shares her story for the first time ever as cofounder of the highly successful and controversial Sandstone Retreat in the late 1960s and early 1970s in her new book, "An Extraordinary Life: Love, Sex, and Commitment" (published by Balboa Press).

Together with her husband, John, Williamson began an intense study in 1966 that focused on identifying the causes of dysfunction and unhappiness. "Few would believe then that it resulted from distortions of our sexuality away from the pathways nature described," she says.

After consulting with experts in psychology, sociology and religion, Williamson began to test limited models of "honest sexuality." She and John decided to create an isolated environment to give mature people an opportunity to test and choose new values for themselves, and the Sandstone Retreat was born.

"Our goal at Sandstone was about understanding society and setting it free," Williamson writes. "We believe in the sexual self as being at the core of organized social behavior; when sexuality is distorted, it leads to a distortion of the basic self."

After retiring, Williamson and her husband settled in Fallon, Nev., and responded to an urgent call to save the lives of lions and tigers facing homelessness and euthanasia. Within 30 days, a permanent home was built for them. In addition to giving an inside look at Sandstone Retreat, "An Extraordinary Life" offers an insight into the personalities of these animals and reveals how much they have in common with humans.
