"A Young Black Stranger in Paradise" (published by Xlibris UK) is a true story about a young daring African-American boy growing to man hood in the 1950s through the 1960s. Author Melvin takes readers back through time to see the challenges people faced during those times and how he and many others rose to the occasion despite the dangers around them.
When time came for him to start school, Melvin was so proud of himself but on the day he was supposed to go to school, his mother told him, "Son, you will start school in the First Baptist Church in Woodbine."
The author remembers how those days in the state of Georgia, everything was segregated for African-Americans. That meant they were not allowed to go in any public place even for a piece of bread, but that did not worry Melvin much. The reason was that he was a clever young boy, he studied well in school and did well in sports. He was confident that he would excel in life because his mother had taught him to show all people respect, regardless of race, and he followed her words to the letter. He always had a smile and made many friends in his community.
His good character helped him fulfill his dreams, though things were not always smooth for him, but he eventually found his paradise, not in Georgia but in Germany, where he had his own business for many years and his own home. He lives there to this day.
"It is the story of a young black boy from Woodbine who grew to a young man, went there to Ralph J Bunch high school for a while, then he left Woodbine on his journey to seek his paradise," says Melvin, describing his book and showing readers an inspiring success story of a man transcending the boundaries of the time and finding happiness and accomplishment.
