A MOTHER'S DEBT Tells First-Hand Account of One of Africa's Child Soldiers

In her new book, "A Mother's Debt: The True Story of An African Orphan" (published by AuthorHouse), author Talent Chioma Mundy-Castle releases a powerful autobiography on life, love and faith.

Born in 1954 in a small village in Eastern Nigeria, Mundy-Castle was faced with tremendous challenges at an early age. Her mother died soon after her birth and her father, distraught at his wife's death, chose not to raise his infant daughter. Subsequently, Mundy-Castle was left in the care of hospital authorities. She was technically classified as an orphan and officially became one when her father died five years later.

"The recurring theme, which manifested itself at my birth, is the constant lack of any identifiable focal point," says Mundy-Castle of her unmoored youth. "I was destined to search for the rest of my life for that elusive feeling of love."

Mundy-Castle's story takes a critical turn when at the age of 13 she becomes a child soldier in the Nigerian-Biafran War. Ironically, she credits the war with saving her life. "This war, so detrimental to most of the population of Biafra, finally shapes my future. The more I was put down the stronger I became."

Mundy-Castle would eventually emigrate to England, where she currently lives. By telling her story, she hopes others are inspired to find hope in their darkest hours.

About the Author
Talent Chioma Mundy-Castle was born into the affluent Oparaji family of high status, the last of nine children and the only girl. She would have been assured of a comfortable and loving upbringing in the family compound in the village of Ezuhu Nguru, Eastern Nigeria; however, she was orphaned at an early age after her mother's untimely death. As a teen, she served in the Nigerian-Biafran War. By the age of 21, she had a growing family of her own.

In 1986 Mundy-Castle moved her family to England. "A Mother's Debt" is her second book. She is also the author of a cookbook on Nigerian recipes.
