A. K. Rakhit's new book title "The Essentials of Material Science and Technology for Engineers" is an extensive, complete and current exposition of material science in engineering or design applications. The book is primarily written for engineers and engineering students for understanding of the basics of material science and material technology. It will definitely help them select proper materials for various engineering applications and service conditions. These include mechanical properties, microstructure analysis for fatigue, creep and corrosion resistance. Presently available books discuss either much of complex physical metallurgy and very little material technology and vice versa.

There is no doubt materials play a significant role in developing reliable, cost-effective, and safe products, whether they are used in the energy generation industry, the transportation industry, or the aerospace industry. Rakhit's work may also encompass design and developing products for higher efficiency and lower cost. New high-strength, low-density materials are continuously in the process of development. Advanced manufacturing techniques are being introduced for improved quality. So it is a major challenge for engineers to keep abreast of these developments for successful careers in their profession, an area which takes up a significant portion of the book.

Special effort has been done to include all the important materials that are frequently used in engineering products with their latest developments. These include cast iron, steel, aluminum, copper, nickel, magnesium, and titanium. Since iron and steel are extensively used in engineering products, a great deal of information is included on these two materials, followed by aluminum and titanium. Finally, the book contains some useful information on polymeric materials, ceramics, composites, and hybrid materials. The usage of composites and hybrid materials are continuously increasing because of their superior weight-to-strength ratio. Not only is there a complete technical compendium of the aforementioned materials, Rakhit uses the most widely-accepted and rigorous standards of material science for this textbook-engineers who want even the most rarefied information on materials science need look nowhere else but within the pages of his book.
