'A Fisher of Slaves' Announces New Marketing Push

PETERSFIELD, England - Dick Parsons has spent his holidays in Gambia and Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) during which he visited the slave forts, firstly Fort George in Gambia and then those in Ghana at Cape Coast and El Mina. His visits on these sites inspired him in writing "A Fisher of Slaves: 2nd Edition" (published by AuthorHouse UK), a love story set against the horrors and moral challenges of the Atlantic Slave Trade (otherwise known as the Triangular Trade).

Published in October of 2015, this novel tells three interwoven stories. The first tells of the horrors of the slave trade as seen through the eyes of Nathaniel, a 12-year-old serving as an apprentice in a slave-ship. The second features his widowed mother Elizabeth, a Rectors' daughter, horrified to learn that her son is serving in a slave-ship. Living in a village makes her desire to help the anti-slavery movement impossible, until she is confronted with an escaped slave and her child. The third strand concerns the master of the slave-ship "Mary Anne." James Youle, a simple mariner who becomes bewitched with Elizabeth, but she on principle, will have nothing to do with a master serving in that evil trade. The three strands eventually join and what unfolds is a tapestry of life and love that will compel readers to read on and find out how their stories will end.

"While there are plenty of history books on the subject of the slave trade, my novel tells the story of the trade through the greed, violence, degradation, suffering, campaigning and posturing of the participants, set against the love story of a principled woman who hates the trade, and the Master of a slave-ship," Parsons says.

Readers will enjoy reading this book. It will give them a feeling of what it was like to have lived through a slaving voyage and the lives of some of its crew. Through this novel, they will have a better understanding of the slave trade and its abolition.

Dick Parsons joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1942 at aged 13, retiring in 1979 as a Lieutenant Commander. Serving mainly in destroyers and frigates, he has had two sea commands. He sails his own yacht Katy Mac, and has served as a crew member in the TS Royalist, a square rigger run by the Sea Cadet Corps. He has lived with his family in Singapore and Malta and his wide travels have included The Gambia and Ghana where the slave forts of Fort George, Cape Coast and Elmina sparked his interest in the Atlantic slave trade.
