Katherine Nepomuceno Uy was just only eight years old when she wrote and published her first children's storybook, titled Teeny Tiny People and Pets. Since then, her book has been made available and displayed in the school library in St. Ignatius School in Sacramento, Calif. and its young author featured in a Sacramento newspaper. Now aged 10, and not one to rest on her laurels, she keeps her promise and comes out with her second book-The Adventures of Tessa: Tessa and the Secret Tunnel.
Tessa, the main character in the series, is like any other ordinary girl. However, according to her creator, her name stands for something out of the ordinary. "TESSA" is actually an acronym for: The adventurous girl, Especially curious, Super determined, Super daring, and A girl who had never had an Adventure before-until something extraordinary happens.
Tessa has a dilemma. She badly wants to go off on an exhilarating adventure. However, she has never even gone to a different state, or town, or country before. She has never been anywhere in her life that is worth considering as an adventure. Her parents could not afford the money needed to travel, nor the time for a long drive.
Tessa's only "adventure" was to the hospital to get her first shot. Other than that, she has only been to the mall and has enjoyed the cotton candy, and has only been to one party, where she even forgot her best friend's present. Will she ever taste real adventure soon? Tessa, together with Breena and Rosie, is about to find out.
With the spirit of adventure residing in every child to a high degree, The Adventures of Tessa: Tessa and the Secret Tunnel is one book that truly appeals to young adventurous readers. Readers can also easily relate with the characters as topics on fun and friendship, school and computer researching are shared. Through her story and her success as a self-published author, Uy's message is: "Don't lose hope when you want to do something."
