Meet Leonard, a bubbly leopard and transgender single dad in "When Leonard Lost His Spots." When it comes to learning about gender diversity, love and acceptance, Leonard and his young son, Cub delight us with their nurturing story and journey into self-discovery. Narrated by Cub, "When Leonard Lost His Spots" tackles the challenge of explaining gender transitions to young children. Told in a rhythmic and fun, yet honest way, it explores the difficult fact that kids often have no say in their family structure and must adapt and thrive. However, this fun and inspiring story also teaches that tenderness is strength and even the most unique and seemingly difficult circumstances can be conquered with open communication, respect, patience and love.

Bursting with spirited illustrations, "When Leonard Lost His Spots" is a passionate tale that celebrates the differences in LGBT families while not discounting some of the obstacles they may face due to their uniqueness.

Early readers in similar family structures will recognize themselves in young Cub as he tries his best to understand the grown-up world around him. This title will encourage early childhood literacy, foster healthy self-reflection, build self-esteem and help to reinforce family values already taught in the home.

A writer and poet, Monique Costa is the creator of Le Poème Shoppe, where she writes personalized gifts of poetry, interpreted for clients. She is also the founder of The Coach Wags Memorial Foundation, a charity that raises money for patients fighting pediatric cancer. Costa has a degree in journalism and has worked in the advertising and marketing industries for the last twenty years. The Philadelphia native lives in Mullica Hill, New Jersey with her husband Frank, her two young sons, Frankie and Nicolas.
