Thousands of Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving Day on Thursday with their immediate family and then with their larger societal family through volunteerism, from driving meals to the elderly and shut-in to serving the homeless a hot meal through soup kitchens.
In business, externally-focused actions that benefit the larger societal good, while also benefiting the entrepreneur and his or her business, is what author and businessman JV Crum III calls social consciousness. It is a central theme of his new book, "Conscious Millionaire: Grow Your Business by Making a Difference" (Conscious World Press LLC, 282 pages, launched Nov. 18, Kindle; print edition forthcoming, March 2014), which this month ascended to the No. 1 spot among entrepreneur Kindle books on Amazon.
To impress upon entrepreneurs and others the importance of giving back, Crum is offering his new book, "Conscious Millionaire" for free only on Black Friday, Nov. 29, at: http://www.consciousmillionaire.com/m12.
"From the time that many of us grow up, we understand that Thanksgiving is the time to be grateful for personal blessings, but we also are encouraged to demonstrate our thanks by helping others," Crum says. "For entrepreneurs, I call it 'Second Stage Capitalism,' where the socially conscious entrepreneur focuses on achieving a higher purpose for their business based on a heart desire to improve lives, organizations and our world."
In "Conscious Millionaire," Crum tells his story of how he turned his father's fledging trucking business to profitability in his 20s. But even after he had achieved financial success, Crum didn't feel fulfilled and turned his thinking to social consciousness, aligning his business focus and wealth creation to a larger life purpose. Crum later founded Conscious Millionaire Institute LLC, a global entrepreneur training and business coaching company that helps start-ups and established entrepreneurs achieve their higher purpose and create higher profits.
"Conscious Millionaire" discusses how entrepreneurial success isn't about trial-and-error or happenstance. Instead, the most successful entrepreneurs who create wealth take "conscious focused action" - that is, they make conscious business decisions based on ethics, integrity and a sincere desire to improve their community and the world. In doing so, they create a "Triple Win" business model where the entrepreneur, customers and society all winning together. . Crum says current and potential customers respond to businesses that genuinely care about them, rather than only about profits.
"When entrepreneurs place the problems and aspirations of customers first, customers respond through loyalty, continued patronage or referrals," he says.
Intuitively Americans understand the importance of giving back, and they do it in a significant way. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 64.5 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once in 2012, spending a median of 50 hours on volunteer activities during the year. On Thanksgiving, that means activities such as serving dinner at a homeless shelter, driving meals to elderly or the disabled, visiting a retirement home or even making a special effort to check-in on neighbors who may be alone.
"By paying attention to what is in your heart - the authentic ways you want to help others, then expressing these in your business purpose - you will not only make a powerful difference, you will create your highest profits," Crum writes.
Customers gravitate to businesses that consistently act in the best interest of their customers and society. Crum says that developing trust, familiarity, and predictability in the minds of customers results from entrepreneurs and their teams always doing what's right. From a business perspective, doing what's right means building products designed to truly benefit customers, not harming the environment through business practices, and handling disputes in a manner that upholds the entrepreneur's stated values.
"Think of it within the context of doing what's right 100 percent of the time - making all your behaviors completely congruent with what you promise and say you value," Crum says. "It's not about talking the talk. It's about walking the walk - consistently."
