Author Ana Maria Ward remembered when her father was given a Quilt of Valor, and she realized that people are all connected like patches on a quilt. In I Am a Patchwork Quilt, she recalls how her connection with her parents from the day she was born paved a way for her to experience that bond with other significant people she met and befriended.

While writing her first book, a biography about her father, Gordon F. Ward, the author became inspired to write about those she met in her world travels, including places such as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Panama, and Okinawa, who touched her and influenced her. Although her father was ill, he read some of the first chapters or "patches" and encouraged her to continue with her theme during his final days. Her father is one of the most influential figures in her life, and some of the people included in the patches are directly linked to him.

Related to the "degrees of separation," each person or patch has a unique relationship to the author, some with seriousness and some with humor. The book is an amusing blend of stories and anecdotes about the different people she meets throughout her journey, including her immediate and extended family, the friends she treasured over the years and those she met through her father. The readers may laugh and cry, and will be moved to find that around the world people will feel warm when magically entwined in the blanket of love.

Engaging and inspiring, I Am a Patchwork Quilt shows how Ward gathered her patches of people and experiences making her an exceptional assortment of patches. As long as she gathers more personal knowledge and exposure, she will continue to be a work in progress. This book will definitely make the readers realize that they too are meaningful in the lives of others.
