Road Less Traveled Productions is excited to announce its 2019/20 season! Featuring five full regular season theatrical productions, RLTP's 16thseason will include:
THE AUTHENTIC LIFE OF BILLY THE KID
By Lee Blessing
Directed by Scott Behrend
September 12 October 6
The West is what you make of it. Outside of that it doesn't exist. So says Ash Upson to Pat Garrett after he arrives unexpectedly at Garrett's failing ranch in Las Cruces. Decades after the deed, Garrett is living out his life as The Man Who Shot Billy the Kid . Or is he? When Upson confronts him with an audacious proposition and a very much alive Billy the Kid, Garrett must decide what to make of his past memories and, more importantly, his future legacy; if Billy the Kid is alive, then who is Pat Garrett? With creativity and skill, this tantalizing what-if scenario blends fact and fiction in a drama that is at times both funny and unnerving as it first questions and then deconstructs our personal and cultural mythmaking.
INTERROGATION ROOM
Artie Award for Best New Play, 2004
By Jon Elston
Directed by Scott Behrend
November 1 November 24, 2019
A young girl is brutally murdered. Two suspects, one black one white, face the heat from Detectives Bremen and Janetty, hardboiled cops determined to unearth the truth. Or are they? As the interrogation wears on, Bremen and Janetty find themselves questioning each other's motives as much as the suspects when prejudices threaten to derail the investigation. RLTP Resident Playwright Jon Elston revisits his sharp, fast-paced crime drama with fresh insight from our contemporary vantage in this timely revival of his Artie Award winning play.
THE ANTIPODES
AWestern New York Premiere
By Annie Baker
Directed by Scott Behrend
January 16 February 9, 2020
STARRING RLTP'S 2019/20 AMERICAN THEATRE MASTER, A BUFFALO NATIVE AND STAGE & SCREEN ACTOR, Sean Cullen!
Once upon a time, a group of writers gathered around a conference table in pursuit of the perfect untold tale: a story so epic, so truthful that it could change the world. From personal anecdotes to universal lore, from the mundane to the bizarre, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Annie Baker takes us down the rabbit hole of our own mythologizing in a fevered brainstorming session that ultimately questions not only what stories are left to tell, but why tell stories at all? The Antipodesis a darkly humorous and incisive look at the absurdity of the human condition and our relentless need to order our disordered world.
HAND TO GOD
A Western New York Premiere
By Robert Askins
Directed by John Hurley
March 5 March 29, 2020
A 2015 Broadway Comedy! In the wake of tragedy, Jason and his mother renew their commitment to the local church and commit to organizing a spiritually redemptive puppet show. There's only one problem: although Jason is essentially a nice boy, his hand puppet Tyrone is lewd, profane, combative, and refuses to leave Jason's left arm. Yes, Jason's hand puppet is moved by a greater power... the power of Satan.
THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE WATSON INTELLIGENCE
A Western New York Premiere
By Madeleine George
Directed by Katie Mallinson
April 23 May 17, 2019
Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes' trusty companion; Thomas A. Watson, assistant to Alexander Graham Bell; Watson, the unstoppable supercomputer Jeopardy! champ; and Watson, a Dweeb Team everyman. Four Watsons in three centuries unite to tell one tale in this playful, time-traveling drama about the foibles and frustrations of the human heart and the technology on which it increasingly relies. This 2014 Pulitzer Prize Finalist for Drama is a meditation about what it means to be dependent on devices and also on other people [it's] just a different iteration of an ancient problem. When you're dependent on another person or on systems you can't understand, you're vulnerable. It's the human condition.
