The second presentation in American Repertory Theater of WNY's 2013-14 season is an original full length work recounting the final day of legendary bluesman, Robert Johnson. Written by Artie Award winning playwright, Mark Humphrey, this compelling work features veteran Buffalo actors, Hugh Davis and Robert Ernie Insana with Gail Golden returning to ART/WNY to offer her directorial eye. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!
The time is August 16th, 1938 and Robert Johnson is about to shrug off this mortal coil. Gripped by a nauseating pain in his gut, he ascends the stairs and enters his lowly hotel room to lie down but is greeted by a mysterious stranger who claims to be a collector. Only for Robert this gentleman, by the name of Woodrow, isn't looking for a late payment on the cable bill. Soon after losing several games of poker, sharing a shot of whiskey and recalling a time when Johnson meet an "Old Gentleman" at the Crossroads, the famed bluesman realizes what Woodrow is calling upon.
A relatively short play of 60 minutes, director Gail Golden along the production crew, including ART/WNY's in-house set designer Lauren Millman's simple but stunning set, maintain a honest yet captivating rendering world premier of Mark Humphrey's LITTLE ROBERT.
