Gayle Petri is a talented young artist with a wonderful gift and a beautiful vision.
When and how did painting first enter your life?
When I was a child my parents would take me to Park West Art Gallery auctions; they're art collectors and we have countless pieces hanging in our house, so I've always been surrounded by art. I
Do you remember the first thing you painted? What was it?
I don't remember the first thing I painted but I've always loved painting princesses and characters that I like from movies tv shows and books that influence me.
Described your style
My style is a very smooth and whimsical dream-like style, I like to include flowing organic lines, bright colors, and I like to put lots of character and brightness in every person that I paint.
What other artist have been major influences on you? Why?
I love Peter Max's bright and colorful pop art style, it's very expressive and that's something I try to emulate in my art. I'm also a big fan of Rebecca Sugar. Not only is her artwork whimsical and fantastical and beautiful, but she is very talented and successful at representing all different kinds of people in her artwork which is also something I try to do.
You have an art exhibit coming up. How did that come about? Is this your first one? Details?
It's not exactly an art exhibit, I have created all the posters for O'Connell & Company's upcoming season of shows (six posters total), which they will use for advertisement. Mary Kate O'Connell works with my mom, Kim, and knew about my artistic aspirations and asked me to design a set of six posters for her shows in the style of Peter Max. This is the first large collection of art I've had on display, although I have sold my work at shows before.
What is it about painting that you are drawn to?
I love being able to create something beautiful. I love being able to take an image in my head of something beautiful and create it and share it with everyone. I also love seeing the progression of my idea come together from a sketch to a full color painting, it's very rewarding.
Time to promote ... What else is coming up for you in 2017 and 2018?
I'm preparing my portfolio applications for college (I'm applying to CalArts and Columbus College of Art and Design, among other art colleges). I'm hoping to finish a graphic novella (titled Waltz of the Eclipse) that I've started. Hopefully I'll be able to produce and sell it in 2017/2018 so keep an eye out for that. Throughout the year, my art will be displayed at Clarence Center Coffee and at Clarence High School.
