The People Movers, known for creating and producing socially, politically, and culturally relevant works, announce the fifth chapter of CRAWL, a multi-disciplinary, nomadic arts presenting series, now in its second year. On April 8 and 9, 2016, the fifth chapter of the series will take place at 22 Boerum Place in Brooklyn at 7:30 p.m. The evening will feature performances by Grace Courvoisier & Dance Company, cross-disciplinary Same As Sister, and musical duo Overcoats that offer feminine perspectives on identity, power dynamics, and forced expectations.

CRAWL events foster and support creative comings-together between artists and audiences. This chapter brings together three female perspectives to investigate power dynamics within relationships, based on aesthetic, familial, and/or romantic expectations. The three artists search for the line between forced and found identities amidst societal pressure.

"The need for CRAWL has been evident in reflecting upon the success of our inaugural year," says founder Kate Ladenheim. "We created an artist-first community that actively seeks to imagine an alternative, progressive vision of arts presentation. This vision equally values accessibility and critical discourse. Continuing in this trajectory, our next chapter features Grace Courvoisier, Overcoats, and Same as Sister, who are reacting to the way that gendered power dynamics transfer into our society - and these artists have found evocative, creative, and honest ways to address this issue."

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Grace Courvoisier & Dance Company: Daughters of David | World Premiere

Inspired by the belief that the physicality of a woman's body can house historical and emotional landscapes, GC&DC excavates female vulnerability and vulgarity through voice and movement. Daughters of David presents the labor and the love the performers have taken in from the David's of their conscious and subconscious. Directly influenced by the male archetypes of world history and personal history; David Bowie, Michelangelo's statue of David, David the ex-boyfriend, etc., these girls process their idea of loyalty to these men, but also their rebellion, exploring the space between Father David and Male Suppression.

Same as Sister: Women Times Three

Employing a cross-disciplinary approach to performance making, Same As Sister combines original dance, music, and video to construct narratives that convey the complexity of human behavior and its inherent uncanniness. Their work, Women Times Three, delves into the inseparable bond between terror and horror to exert dominance over our own and others psyches.

Overcoats

Overcoats is New York-based musical duo Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell. Their sound captivates, combining electronic backdrops with soaring, harmonic intimacy - a sort of Chet Faker meets Simon & Garfunkel. Overcoats' songs draw strength from vulnerability. Their work for CRAWL comments on the preservation of personal identity and finds uplifting beauty in simple, honest songwriting.

CRAWL: Chapter 5 will take place Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. Babble, a pre- performance discussion moderated by Cecilia Lynn-Jacobs, will occur at 6:30 p.m. on April 9th, free to all ticket holders. Individual tickets are priced at $18 (early bird rate before March 25) and $20, and can be found at crawlchapter5.eventbrite.com.
