In this vibrant re-imagining of one of Chekhov's most iconic plays, New Saloon uses the idiosyncratic Russian malaise that hangs over the characters in Uncle Vanya to give voice to a generation of young people struggling to connect with each other and themselves while quaking under the pressure to succeed. MINOR CHARACTER is a symphonic new work in which identity is plural; communication is an athletic feat; failure is inevitable.
Director and New Saloon co-founder Morgan Green says, "this project is born out of a love of Chekhov, as well as a desire to be sincere and to stage Uncle Vanya in the overpowering and impassioned way we think it should be staged. We want to achieve the full emotional score of what Chekhov wrote, and we need a barrage of language in order to do so; one translation is not enough."
New Saloon is Milo Cramer, Morgan Green, and Madeline Wise, a theater company dedicated to creating handcrafted original performances - from evening-length dramas to two-minute dance videos - with dedication and love. They celebrate the unique and enduring aspects of live performance and the dramatic canon, while simultaneously embracing social media and our smart phones as new platforms for thinking and playing. They find joy in anachronism, sincerity, theatricality, hard work, and color.
Performances of MINOR CHARACTER will take place June 17-25 (see schedule above) at The Invisible Dog Art Center, which is located at 51 Bergen Street in Brooklyn. Critics are welcome as of June 18 for an official opening June 20. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased by visiting www.artful.ly/store/events/9165.
