The Green-Wood Cemetery has released its calendar of fall programs, and it includes the return of popular events as well as new and engaging experiences. After the cancellation of many favorite in-person events last fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Green-Wood looks forward to welcoming back visitors for trolley and walking tours, art installations, concerts, and much more. Green-Wood will continue offering virtual programming for those who cannot or are not ready to be there in person.

"We are incredibly grateful to be able to welcome visitors back for our fall programs after a hiatus from many in-person activities over the year. Our staff have been working diligently for months to provide the kinds of in-person events and experiences that awaken the senses, nourish curious minds, and explore beliefs. And, because Green-Wood's virtual programming was so popular-reaching people who have never lived anywhere near Brooklyn-we will continue to offer online opportunities to learn, discuss, and come together," said Richard Moylan, President, The Green-Wood Cemetery.

Green-Wood will open the season with a concert commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Curated by composer Buck McDaniel, and including the premiere of a new work, Memory Ground, the performance invites attendees to gather together in remembrance of those lost.

Starting Wednesday, September 15th, Green-Wood presents After the End, a viewer participatory installation-designed by artists Candy Chang and James Reeves and located in the Historic Chapel-that invites visitors to share their experiences with loss in a public ritual.

Then, on September 25th, Green-Wood's popular trolley tours-ADA-compliant tours of the grounds-return following a COVID-imposed hiatus. While many visitors enjoy exploring the Cemetery's 478 acres on foot, the trolley offers an alternate way to experience the abundance of art, history, and nature in the area. Bookings, which routinely sell out, open to the general public on August 16th. This season's themed tours focus on the Brooklyn Bridge; LGBTQ+ pioneers; World War II veterans; Spiritualists and Suffragettes; Murder, Mayhem, and Disaster; and inspirational women. On top of that, the Discover Green-Wood trolley tour every Saturday features highlights for old friends and new visitors alike.

The "Angel's Share" series, presented in partnership with Death of Classical, returns in September with Music for Two People, a one-night-only performance featuring award-winning musicians Caroline Shaw and Andrew Yee. Just two weeks later, world-renowned pianist Simone Dinnerstein will guide audiences across Green-Wood-pausing to play on pianos scattered along the route-for a new work, An American Mosaic. Each movement commemorates a different segment of the American population affected by the pandemic (September 15th-17th). And in October, the choir Cantori New York will perform Fauré's Requiem by candlelight for a large, outdoor audience. This piercingly beautiful work has been called a "lullaby of death" (October 21st-23rd).

Green-Wood walking tours offer visitors a variety of experiences, including exploring flora and mushrooms; visiting the final resting places of Black New Yorkers who challenged segregation and racism; and entering the Catacombs after dark (these are normally closed to the public). There is also a Post-Turkey Day Walking Tour for those who need a day-after stretch.

Open Doors, one of Green-Wood's most popular events, also returns in the fall. This self-guided walking tour invites explorers to peek inside the elaborate gates of some of the stunning mausoleums. Docents at each location offer a glimpse into the lives of those who now rest in these opulent edifices.

The virtual Death Education series invites people to participate in open, frank discussions on death. Two highlights of the season include a panel, A Day in the Life of a Mortuary Science Student, and our interactive book club, Mortality and Me.

Children of all ages are invited to enjoy crafts, activities, and food with their families while learning about Día de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday that commemorates departed loved ones through prayer, altars, music, and dance (November 1st).

There's always a tasty cocktail recipe ready for the virtual History Happy Hours. Guests are invited to explore such topics as nineteenth-century grave robbers and the medical schools that relied on them.

Green-Wood's fall line-up will also include a concert with gifted alto saxophonist and composer Darius Jones-stay tuned for details.
