The Bushwick Starr is thrilled to present the Spanish language premiere of FURRY!/LA FURIA!, written and directed by WilLiam Burke in special "Spanglish translation" that tells the story of a street Elmo who rises to power by taking over the streets of 42nd to 46th street by using The Art of War. In a reworking of his 2013 play for one actor and a dirty Sesame Street Army, playwright and director WilLiam Burke is joining forces with Modesto "Flako" Jimenez and Brooklyn Gypsies Collective in a new and explosive Spanish/Spanglish/human translation of FURRY!/LA FURIA depicting the struggle of a pan handling Time Square Elmo. In order to care for his ailing son, a man dressed in his street Elmo best, attempts take over the blocks of 42nd - 46th street, using The Art of War, an army of Elmos and his deepest and most violent self. Naked Cowboy beware. When Elmo Close...Elmo appear Far. The army gathers.

About the Artists:
WilLiam Burke is playwright and director. His productions include the food was terrible (The Bushwick Starr), PIONEERS!#goforth (JACK), COMFORT DOGS: Live from the Pink House (JACK) and FURRY! (JACK). With Target Margin Theater: I Made a Mistake, EXPLODITY! and DAY!Night?fuck (The Stahl Center at Stoney Brook University) He has developed his plays/presented readings at The BLACK SWAN Lab (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), The Bushwick Starr, Little theatre (Dixon Place), The Prelude Festival (CUNY Grad center) and CATCH. William studied playwriting at Brooklyn College with Mac Wellman and Erin Courtney.

Modesto Flako Jimenez is a Dominican-born, Bushwick-raised theater director, writer, poet, actor, producer, and educator. ATI & HOLA Award Winner, NY Times and Wall Street Journal profiled, "Flako" is best known for original productions and three signature festivals - Ghetto Hors D'Oeuvres, One Catches Light, and Oye! Avant Garde Night! - produced with his company Brooklyn Gypsies Collective. Flako has appeared on TEDxBushwick, Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Favorite: Early Shaker Spirituals (Wooster Group), Last Night At The Palladium (Bushwick Starr/3LD), Yoleros (Bushwick Starr/IATI theater), Conversations Pt.1: HowTo Make It Black In America (JACK). Take Me Home (3LD/ Incubator Arts Project). Upcoming: Oye For My Dear Brooklyn (The Performing Garage), Furry by WilLiam Burke (Bushwick Starr), Samara by Richard Maxwell (Soho Rep; dir. Sarah Benson). Modesto received the 2016 Princess Grace Award Honorarium in Theater.

Brooklyn Gypsies is an eclectic artist collective made up of New Yorkers both native and immigrant to our city. We present annual showcases of new works of theater, dance, poetry and film that spark dialogues on critical issues of immigration, economics, and urban survival. We curate a mix of established and emerging artists and give them a platform to explore complex issues in a stimulating environment. Brooklyn Gypsies is a playground to celebrate and share what is unique about Brooklyn's converging arts communities.
