As we know New York City is chalk full of opportunities to see great theatre. But if you are a Brooklyn native or looking to catch a play there, here are a few of the borough's best offerings.

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)

If your a Brooklynite you've probably walked through the doors of BAM. If you haven't...that's a shame. Regardless, if ever there was a time to introduce or reintroduce yourself to BAM it is this summer. Some of the highlights this season include: The National Theatre Live: King Lear, featuring Simon Russell Beale in the title role and Academy Award winning Sam Mendes as director, May 31, and The Old Woman starring Willem Dafoe and Mikhail Baryshnikov, June 22 through June 29. Robert Wilson is not only the director of the piece, but conceptualized lighting and set design.

Box Office Summer Hours, July 1 through September 2: Mon-Thu noon-6pm, Fri noon-2pm; closed weekends & holidays. For a full menu of services, including dining and transportation, go to http://www.bam.org/visit. For more show descriptions, offerings, or ticket pricing visit www.bam.org or call 718.636.4100.

Theatre for a New Audience

This theatre's productions have continually earned prestigious awards and they are not lowering the bar this season. The newly translated version of The Killer, starring Michael Shannon, will be closing June 29th. It has a company of some very talented actors directed by Darko Tresnjak. Should you be willing to stick around A Midsummer Night's Dream will be opening on October 19th, through the 12th of January. The play headed by Tony Award winning director Julie Taymor has already been the subject of critical acclaim.

They are located near all major subway lines, a variety of bus lines, and the LIRR. Further transportation information, dining, and accommodations are found here: http://www.tfana.org/new-home/visit/directions. For ticket information visit www.tfana.org or call 866.811.4111.

Gi60 - Gone In Sixty Seconds

If theatre off the beaten path is what you require then The Brooklyn College Theater Department and Screaming Media Productions hybrid will hit the spot. According to the website, 2014 marks Gi60's tenth anniversary as the world's one and only International One Minute Theatre Festival. They offer a international selection of over 100 plays and feature their 'Top 60' plays of the decade. Plus, if you can not make it, all plays are live on webcast at www.brooklyncenter.org or recorded and made available on the Gi60 Channel.
