Shuga Pie Supreme is thrilled to present Their food tastes better when they see us starving as part of The Brick's Shakespeare in the Theatre Festival on August 20th, 23rd and 25th
In Their food tastes better when they see us starving (or, Coriolanus), a warhawk fights to appeal to the same plebeians she holds in utter contempt. A feverish collision of Shakespeare's Coriolanus and Brecht's unfinished adaptation by the same name, arranged by performing artist Chris Tyler and director Anne Ciarlone, this devised multimedia work hyper-textually explores the volatile nature of democracy and the complicated role the military-industrial complex plays in the continued subjugation of working class people around the world.
This 50-minute performance will feature Andrew D'Anneo, Madeleine Dauer, Chris Ignacio, Molly Jones, Yael Rizowy, Tricia Sorresso. The production design is by Sonya Plenefisch, lighting design by Aren Carpenter, movement by Sidney Erik Wright, stage management by Callan Giles and is produced by Sarah George and Charles Quittner.
Audiences might see placards and puppets, dogs and robots, and other symbols of theatrical irreverence aiding in the storytelling. "Oh, and don't be reverent...Never be reverent." reads an early stage direction in Tyler's devised adaptation built from conversations with the cast.
"My favorite part of the process of this production has been ripping apart existing structural texts to build a piece that exposes the essential questions and truths present within the story.." said Madeleine Dauer. "I hope the audience is left with the courage to question the existing structures in our own society, and begin to recognize ways that we, as plebeians ourselves, can help dismantle oppressive structures to build an equitable society. "
Tickets are $15 with the code Shakes ($20 regular). with performances running August 20th @ 9:30, August 23rd @ 7:00, and August 25th @ 5:00 at The Brick (579 Metropolitan Ave). https://bit.ly/2MhrhPy
