RestorationART at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation facilitates a call to rally the NYC arts community to come together as one voice at the non-partisan event, SPEAK FREEDOM on Sunday, August 25 - the actual day when the first slave ship, the White Lion, made the first Trans-Atlantic voyage 400 years ago to bring "20 and odd" people of Africa to the shores of Jamestown. The event will occur from 12 to 6pm at Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, hosted by Award-winning Radio Host Terrance McKnight.
SPEAK FREEDOM calls out to the NYC arts community to join a collective of art leaders, musicians, dancers, actors, spoken word artists, poets, and all to share an artistic work or words of inspiration within the topic of "Speak Freedom." Space is limited! To hold a time slot reach out via email to ksmith@restorationplaza.orgwith "SPEAK FREEDOM SIGN-UP" in the subject line of the email.
"Since the Civil Rights Movement, Restoration Plaza has been a Town Square for voices of justice. Like many of us, our communities, and our institutions, we were forged in the kiln of movements where people reached across difference and stood together to speak up for the freedoms of all people and to speak out against injustice, ignorance, and bigotry" stated Indira Etwaroo, Ph.D. Executive Director, The Billie Holiday Theatre and RestorationART. "We cannot tire in the fight for justice."
"Whether it's a baobob tree or a ballot box," stated Terrance McKnight, "communities of like-minded people have a way of coming together in crunch time. It's crunch time and we'll forge ahead together making art for a brighter tomorrow. I look forward to this communal gathering."
