Coney Island USA, the non-profit multi-arts center dedicated to the economic and cultural revitalization of its iconic neighborhood, will hold its 2018 fall fundraiser on Saturday, November 10. Proceeds from the "Raise the Roof" benefit will help fund vital structural repairs to the organization's landmarked headquarters at 1208 Surf Avenue, which currently houses the beloved Freak Bar, the Coney Island Museum, and the Sideshows by the Seashore theater.
Since 1917, through various incarnations - a Child's restaurant, the Blue Bird Casino, the Wonderland Circus Sideshow - 1208 Surf Avenue has welcomed a century's worth of visitors to the historic amusement district. Twenty-two years ago, Coney Island USA began transforming the Spanish revival-style building into a center for the preservation of the neighborhood's history and culture.
"Last year, we celebrated a hundred years of memories at 1208 Surf Avenue - a rare place where visitors from all over the world and all walks of life can come together, truly be themselves, and always feel welcome. Now we're looking towards the next hundred years," said Dick D. Zigun, Coney Island USA's Founder and Artistic Director. "Supporting us at our 'Raise the Roof' event means helping to ensure our home remains a stable presence in the People's Playground for generations to come."
The "Raise the Roof" fundraiser will feature food, drinks, and entertainment from local vendors and performers, all showcasing the essence of Coney Island's spirit and personality. Tickets are $100, available at bit.ly/RaiseRoof.
