Day of the Dead LIVE! opens at Brooklyn Art Haus on October 18th and runs through November 1st.
An intrepid group made the journey to Williamsburg Brooklyn last Thursday night for a preview of a new musical, Day of the Dead LIVE!. Barbara Tober led a caravan of more than a dozen friends, with others joining her there, for a riotous evening of diabolical music from European and Mexican classical and popular composers, presented by the gifted young pianist, Llewellyn Sánchez-Werner and accompanied by life-sized puppets and circus performers, directed by Juanita Cardenas. It’s a show for children and adults, themed on the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos.

Nothing could have been more appropriate than the Consulate General of Mexico in New York, Jorge Islas López, celebrating his birthday with the cast. A post performance party included Yanna Avis, Jacqueline Weld Drake, Sharon King Hoge, Sophie Aliece Hollis, Kathy Irwin, Jill Kargman, Crystal Meers, Chris Minev, Tinu Naija, Peter Olsen, Alisa Regas, Bradley Strauchen-Scherer, Ted Taylor, and Pam Taylor Yates.
Music, including Saint-Saen’s Danse Macabre, Liszt’s Dante Sonata, popular songs by Mexican composers Rubio and Velázquez, plus Bernstein's Mambo! are all accompanied by dancing skeletons, jugglers, a trapeze artist, and playfully animated jaguars. With a nod to Pancho Villa, Zapata, Frida Kahlo, and Diego Rivera, it is a one-hour show made for children and the child in all of us, with music that will not disappoint the most sophisticated aficionados.
Day of the Dead LIVE!, a production of the Acronym Fund, opens at Brooklyn Art Haus on October 18th and runs through November 1st, including performances on Halloween and Day of the Dead. Tickets are just $25 and can be purchased at www.BKArtHaus.com.
