New LGBTQ Arts Nonprofit Kicks Off Inaugural Performance Event

NOGO Arts announces its inaugural production, Untether, featuring the work of seven LGBTQ identified artists over three nights at the Muriel Schulman Theater at Triskelion Arts. Co-sponsored by Triskelion Arts, Untether brings visual arts, contemporary dance, solo performance, and puppetry together to celebrate the individual free from convention and expectation. Untether releases itself from traditional presentations of work. Comic strip-memoirs are performed, puppets hold forth on life and dreams, love letters are delivered (or not), bodies are remembered, and family secrets revealed throughout the evening length performance.

Every evening begins with a quartet of artists. From beyond New York, NOGO Arts welcomes choreographer Elliot Emadian (Illinois) and the comic-illustration work of Violet Austerlitz (Iowa). From the New York area, Diego Vela's photographic collage pieces and Delaney McDonough's new choreographic work (NYC debut) round out the front half of Untether.

Following the opening half, Untether presents a different artist each night:
Thursday night features Maybe Burke, recently in NY Times Critics' Pick Red Emma and the Mad Monk, performing excerpts from their "uniquely episodic play" Love Letters to Nobody or Insignificant Others. Burke performs "letters they have sent, or written and never sent, to past lovers, abusers, and family members. A bracingly honest reflection on dating while trans, Love Letters to Nobody chronicles a journey towards understanding that finding love does not have to mean losing who you are."

Friday night brings EV Fitzgerald and her panoply of puppets for Puppets. Puppets? PUPPETS!. Part story telling and part puppet confessional, Puppets. Puppets? PUPPETS! pairs Fitzgerald's honest delivery with a mermaid, a ballerina, a bird, and a rambunctious 12 year-old to remind us how to dream and connect today.
Saturday night welcomes Ya-Ya Fairley to bring Untether to a close. They will show a new extended version of their solo Beach Haus which premiered at the F.A.B. 13th Annual Winter Dance Festival. Continuing their ongoing research of how race, gender, and sexuality function in dance and performance, Beach Haus is a "meditative piece on notions of identity, (re)memory and withholding."

NOGO Arts is a registered nonprofit organization in New York State whose mission is to promote and present LGBTQ work in the arts and humanities to explore the diversity of our community and to educate the larger community.
