Gallery Players continues its 51st season with a blast from the past, Neil Simon's comedy classic, Plaza Suite. Perhaps Simon's best work, this three-act masterpiece is a portrait of three couples successively occupying Suite 719 at the Plaza Hotel: a suburban couple from Mamaroneck, a Hollywood producer and his old flame, and a couple from Forest Hills on their daughter's wedding day. Plaza Suite shows Simon's wit and comic genius at their very best.
Plaza Suite opened on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre on Valentine's Day in 1968. The production was directed by Mike Nichols, and featured George C. Scott and Maureen Stapleton appearing as each couple. Mike Nichols won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play, and Neil Simon was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play but lost to Tom Stoppard for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Maureen Stapleton was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play but lost to Zoe Caldwell in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
Set in 1960s, Plaza Suite follows a suburban couple who take the suite while their house is being painted and it turns out to be the one in which they honeymooned 23 years before. This wry tale of marriage in tatters is followed by the exploits of a Hollywood producer who, after three marriages, is looking for fresh fields. He calls a childhood sweetheart, now a suburban housewife, for a little sexual diversion. Over the years she has idolized him from afar and is now more than the match he bargained for. The last couple is a mother and father fighting about the best way to get their daughter out of the bathroom and down to the ballroom where guests await her on what should be the happiest day of her life. The New York Post called Plaza Suite, "A wonderfully happy and gratifying evening of sheer entertainment..."
