La Banda Morisca, formed in 2011, has recorded two albums, toured widely, and last appeared in New York as part of Flamenco Festival 2016. The group takes its name from the border that separated the Nasrid Arab-Andalusian Kingdom of Granada from the Crown (Kingdom) of Aragon and Castile in the 13th to 15th centuries - a no man's land where Christian and Muslim dealers, fugitives, and nomads, as well as the first Gypsies coming to the Iberian Peninsula, met and coexisted. This was probably the place where the forms and the sensibility of what would later come to be known as "cante jondo" (deep song) started to crystallize. The group's music is influenced by the numerous cultures that have colonized this land of musicians, poets and pioneers.
The ensemble is comprised of José Maria Cala (vocal), José Cabral (oud, banjo, guitarra Morisca), Antonio Torres (saxophones, tarota, gralla), Juan Miguel Cabral (bass), Andrés Tomás Rodriguez (percussion, drums), and Belén Lucena (violin).
The performance will take place on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 8:00pm at Roulette, 509 Atlantic Ave at 3rd Ave (near BAM & Barclays Center), Brooklyn. Tickets: $25; seniors, students $21. For more information and to purchase tickets please visithttp://www.robertbrowningassociates.com.
