KUSTERA PROJECTS is pleased to present 'The Black Monochrome' featuring three artists - Charlotte Becket, Stephanie Campos and Olivia Drusin - who use an all black format as the basis of their work.

2015 marked the hundred year anniversary of the first black monochrome painting 'Black Square' by Kasimir Malevich unveiled at his first Suprematist exhibition in 1915. The use of the most basic shape and color, or non-color, 'black' represented a break from the old and created a new form of art. Many artists throughout the 20th century like Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Nevelson and Ad Reinhardt all explored the all black format in their work and in some cases became the cornerstone of their career.

Charlotte Becket's mechanical sculptures are black abstract forms that collapse and resume composure. The work's looping, rhythmic motion transforms them from motorized machines to figural abstractions or landscapes.Charlotte received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and an MFA from Hunter College in New York and is an Associate Professor in the Art Department at Pace University. Recent exhibitions include Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens and Mono No Aware at Light Space Studios in Brooklyn.

Stephanie Campos' work is a direct homage to Malevich and the Suprematist movement by using only the most basic shape and color. In her painting 'Warm', a square is repeated in relief on the all black surface of the painting. Stephanie received her BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been shown at The Suburban in Oak Park, Illinois, and at Exit Art in New York.

Olivia Drusin is currently a 2016 BFA candidate of the Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York. For the last several years she has concentrated solely on black on black paintings that push the boundaries of their optical presence by implementing subtle surface changes.

The exhibition has been extended through Sunday, February 28th.
Gallery Hours: Thursday - Sunday, 12-6pm

KUSTERA PROJECTS is located at 57 Wolcott Street between Van Brunt & Richards St. in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY.
