This coming Monday and every Monday through June 2 Knitting Factory Entertainment presents premier Afrobeat exponents Chop and Quench in residency at Knitting Factory Brooklyn. I would love to extend an invitation to you to come see the show.
Comprised of members from the Broadway cast and band of Fela! The Musical (with Sahr Ngaujahat the helm), Chop And Quench (named for Fela Kuti tune) the tore multiple roofs off of the Sundance Film Festival this past January, playing three performances as a component of the Alex Gibney documentary FINDING FELA! world premiere. First, they rocked the FINDING FELA! post-premiere party at the Sundance Channel HQ on Main Street with an amazing performance, entertaining Sundance filmmakers, talent and other guests with a 60-minute set. The band also played to capacity crowds at the KCRW Music Café and for the Sundance Film Festival.
Attendees for the shows included Red Hot Chili Peppers and Atoms For Peace bassist Flea; actor Claudia Black (Farscape, Stargate SG-1); singer Rae Spoon; LOW DOWN director Jeff Preiss; the Sundance Institute's Keri Putnam; Michelle Satter; Peter Golub; Lionsgate Head of Film Music Tracy McKnight; BMI's Doreen Ringer Ross; ASCAP's Loretta Munoz; KCRW DJ's Anne Litt and Jason Bentley; as well as reggae/hip hop musician Matisyahu.
Now that they're back home in New York, the band is working on new material to take into the studio for their first time recording since their Broadway cast release. Members of The Fela! Band have played with such musical heavyweights as Elvis Costello, The Roots, and India Arie; while as a unit they have played with Beyonce, Femi Kuti, and Angelique Kidjo, among others.
