The Brooklyn Museum's Fund for African American Art Benefit honors Pamela J. Joyner, a groundbreaking and innovative art collector and champion of artists of African descent. Joyner's advocacy has had a significant impact in the field and has led to the wider recognition of many artists of African descent. This year's annual benefit and accompanying public program will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2017. The program will begin at 6 pm.

The Fund was founded in 2010 to support and encourage purchases and gifts of pre-1945 art by leading African American artists. The Fund enables the Brooklyn Museum to represent the depth of African American artistic practice over the course of two centuries more fully and permanently than any other New York museum. Recent acquisitions include Laura Wheeler Waring's Woman with Bouquet (circa 1940), Edward M. Bannister's Untitled (Cow Herd in Pastoral Landscape) (1877), Beauford Delaney's Untitled (Fang, Crow and Fruit) (1945), and Nancy Elizabeth Prophet's Untitled (Head) (circa 1930).

Kicking off the event will be a public program featuring a series of rapid-fire conversations with artists Simone Leigh, Hugo McCloud, Julie Mehretu, and Jack Whitten. During the conversations, moderated by curator Rujeko Hockley, each participant will discuss an artist of African descent from a previous generation who has been important to her or his work. Tickets for the public program are $20 for Members and $25 for non-Members. Please visit www.brooklynmuseum.org/calendar for tickets and more information.

The evening will continue with a reception and seated dinner beginning at 7 pm.
