The M Center, a training ground for performing artists of all levels, opened its first class this past week - Playwriting. Produced and published playwright, Robert Liebowitz, a lifelong Brooklynite, teaches an eager group of artists the ways of storytelling for the stage.
The class boasts a distinguished group: Mohammed Saad Ali, a stage and film actor and aspiring young playwright. He is an off-Broadway veteran and member of Genesis Repertory's classical stage company for many years and recently branched into film with featured roles in Veronica's Birthday and Earthmen (currently in pre-production); Christine Conway, a journeyman of the stage as an actor, singer, and professional costume designer, now adds playwright to her credentials; Christopher Sirota, a cinematographer whose works have received international distribution, has a writing career as a reviewer for OuterStage publications, Chris is excited about creating the works now; and Ted Montouri, who co-wrote works off-Broadway, has recently branched out on his own.
Mr. Liebowitz has been a playwright for more than 30 years with numerous works going off-Broadway and to respected regional theatres. One of his plays has been optioned for a feature film and he recently completed his second novel.
The class meets at the M every Thursday evening and will culminate with special performances in Brooklyn and in Manhattan.
Guitar and piano lessons are filling rapidly, acting classes begin in a few weeks, and Mary Elizabeth Micari, founder of the M Center, continues her acclaimed series of classes as well as private lessons.
