Canceling its annual fundraiser and providing human connection when New Yorkers need it most, Brooklyn dance education nonprofit Dancewave will host four free online dance classes for all ages in a variety of global movement styles throughout April.
Sponsored by WABC, Apple Bank, Con Edison and Alloy Development, the Moving Together class series will take place on Wednesdays in April from 4:00-5:00pm EST: April 8th (Bollywood); April 15th (Dancehall); April 22nd (Latin); and April 29th (Afro-Caribbean). Registration and details available at dancewave.org/community-classes. All interested can register for classes on the organization's website and gain access to a Zoom link.
"The Dancewave team has transformed our canceled gala into a positive new offering for all 5 boroughs and the greater metropolitan area. Our Moving Together online dance classes will provide access to an exciting live movement experience for all ages, and real community-wide connection," said Dancewave Executive and Artistic Director Diane Jacobowitz. "This project would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors, some of which have been supporters of Dancewave for many years."
Both on- and offline, Moving Together is a hallmark community-wide event of Dancewave's School & Community Programs, which brings dance residencies to public schools and senior citizen centers, reaching thousands of students of all ages, cultural backgrounds and abilities across all five NYC boroughs. Dancewave's popular city-funded program expanded by over 25% this year.
Dancewave's 40+ contracted residencies in NYC Public Schools were immediately jeopardized by COVID-19-related school closures. Dancewave's staff are currently working individually with each school to customize virtual learning opportunities and engage students with Dancewave teachers for the remainder of the semester. The Moving Together classes will open an additional opportunity for all New Yorkers to participate in an accessible dance experience.
"Dancewave is proud and humbled at the opportunity to be able to gift dance to members of our community at this defining moment," said Sindy Folgar, Director of Dancewave's School & Community Programs.
Additionally, Dancewave offers weekly adult online dance and fitness classes (dancewave.org/adult-classes), with more online class and workshop announcements to be made later this Spring. Donations towards Moving Together free online dance classes support Dancewave's $25,000 for 25 Years GoFundMe Campaign.
