New Relic Theatre has revealed the cast and production crew of their upcoming world premiere play, In the Mouth of the Beast, written by Baylee Shlichtman (Orange County Playwrights Alliance, Flamboyán Emerging Writers Project) and directed by Eliza Palter (LubDub Theatre Company, Union Hall, Theater J, Švandovo Divadlo).
In the Mouth of the Beast follows father/daughter cave explorers Nel and Apa on a forbidden expedition into "the Maw" to search for a mysterious source of clean energy. As they descend, the rational world fractures and the laws of physics melt away. Their journey melds Ancient Greek drama, Taíno folklore, and cosmic horror to a crystalline question: what would you sacrifice to save everything?
"Baylee has developed such a vast and vivid world in this play," said director Eliza Palter, "We knew that to truly bring it to life, we had to honor the seismic stakes that are the heartbeat of the Greek drama-where every choice is a matter of life and death. Nel and Apa's descent into the cave mirrors and expands on the ancient, fateful decisions at the core of Iphigenia at Aulis, a play Baylee drew inspiration from."
Managing producer Chris Phillips added, "Isabel and Enrique are perfectly suited to embody these roles-we are beyond thrilled to have them on board to dive into the Maw alongside our audiences."
The production will feature Enrique Huili and Isabel Sanchez. The Production Team will include set design by George Tsourounakis, lighting design by Emma Wills-Umdenstock, costume design by Madjanah Walters, technical direction by Michael Turner, production stage management by Ellery Cordes, assistant direction by Camila Madero, publicity & marketing by Nicole Albanese, and photo & videography by Jennifer Loo.
In the Mouth of the Beast is directed by Eliza Palter and produced by Chris Phillips.
