Brooklyn Museum Hosts Target First Saturday Events - Music, Visual Arts, Poetry, Dance and More, 3/1

The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday events attract thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. On March 1, we celebrate women's empowerment through an evening of spoken word, interactive art, music, film, and dance. March 1st's highlights include:

5 p.m. Music: Part jazz aficionado, part electronic-rock guru, TECLA infuses her music with diverse influences to create original pop.

5:30-7:30 p.m. Pop-Up Gallery Talks: Short talks about artworks in our collection by women.

6-8 p.m. Pop-Up Poetry: Every ten minutes, happen upon short performances by emerging and established female voices in spoken word.

*6 p.m. Artist Talk: Alison Elizabeth Taylor speaks about her work in our collection and her experience as a woman in the art world.

*6:30 p.m. Performance: Alixa Garcia and Naima Penniman of Climbing Poetree are joined by a six-piece band for a performance encouraging social justice through spoken word.

*7 p.m. Talk: Tatyana Fazlalizadeh talks about her anti-street-harassment project "Stop Telling Women to Smile."

8-9:30 p.m. Book Club: Members of The Feminist Press discuss publishing as a form of activism.

8-10 p.m. Interactive Space: Participate in a micro fiction game or immortalize a text message with artists Anjali Deshmukh and Swati Khurana of the South Asian Women's Creative Collective.

*8:30 p.m. Talk: Writer and performer Toni Blackman explores the intersection of hip-hop and activism.

9 p.m. Dance Performance: All-female capoeira group ABADA presents a traditional Brazilian martial art that combines elements of combat and dance.

9-10 p.m. Music: Venus X, a M.I.A. and GHE20 GOTH1K collaborator, crosses global styles, from Spanish salsa to Turkish techno.

*Denotes a ticketed event. Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Museum admission is free from 5 to 11 p.m. and includes entrance to all galleries and events. Programs are subject to change without notice. Lines for free tickets often form 30 minutes in advance.
