Brooklyn Center For The Performing Arts And Weeksville Heritage Center Present The Eleventh Annual National Grid Earth Day Celebration

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts announces a new partnership with Weeksville Heritage Center (WHC) to co-present their annual National Grid Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 21, 2018. This interactive family event will take place on the beautiful 1.5-acre interpretive landscape of the nationally landmarked, environmentally "green" Weeksville Heritage Center campus in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The National Grid Earth Day Celebration is free and open to the public, with no tickets or reservations required.
Now in its eleventh year, National Grid Earth Day Celebration is designed to educate families on how they can play a role in caring for the Earth and creating a more sustainable future. Interactive family activities and experiential learning games, educational materials, and give-away items will highlight the need for conserving energy, recycling in the home, and having a heightened awareness of the environmental and global issues that we face today. Highlights of the day will include free tours of the historic Hunterfly Road Houses, an ecology workshop in Weeksville's garden, and healthy eating and lifestyle cooking demonstrations.
The Celebration will also include fire prevention demonstrations by the New York City Fire Department, puppeteer Ronny Wasserstrom's Playdate Puppets, martial arts demonstration by TMC Martial Arts, a mobile library unit from the Brooklyn Public Library, an instrument building workshop using recycled and reused materials by educational performance group Bash the Trash, face painting, interactive storytellers, and more.
Two years ago National Grid was one of the honorees and part of the Weeksville Heritage Center celebration and advance viewing of the organization's new Certified LEED Gold Sustainable Education and Cultural Arts Building. The new building gives visitors and the surrounding community opportunities for expanded research, education and programming.

Weeksville Heritage Center is a one-of-a-kind 21st-century cultural institution with a 180-year history.
The organization's mission is to document, preserve and interpret the history of the 19th century African American community of Weeksville, Brooklyn-one of America's many free black communities-and to create and inspire innovative, contemporary uses of African American history through education, the arts, and civic engagement.
