BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange is excited to announce the 2015/16 Performance Season.

BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange's presenting season is an integral part of our core work developing emerging and mid-career artists. Our dedication to presenting new work, work-in-progress, and work in a critical phase of development and experimentation reflects our mission to support artists rather than outcomes. This commitment is also reflected in our guest curated series that includes evenings curated by current and former Artists In Residence, as well as other guests from the community.

The 2015/16 Season features a series of open-studio and informal showings, and formal works-in-progress showcases created by our Artists In Residence (AIR) Daniel Carlton, Will Davis, Kristine Haruna Lee, Paloma McGregor, Marissa Perel, Aurin Squire, and Ni'Ja Whitson. These performances offer artists and audiences multiple opportunities to share intentions, perceptions, and feedback in a way that is influential in the development of the artists' work, and impactful for the audience's insight and appreciation of the work.

The work presented by this season's AIR and guest artists range from provocative and socio-politically relevant performance to work that investigates formal abstract compositional structures.

The UPSTART FESTIVAL, curated by BAX's Founding & Executive Director, Marya Warshaw and 2011-2013 BAX AIR, Jillian Peña, is returning for its 7th year. This festival is designed to give creators of dance, theater and performance work, who have no more than three years of experience showing their work in NYC, an opportunity to show work. The festival facilitates networking opportunities that pave the way for fruitful artistic careers.

New to this season is the CREATING SPACE initiative funded in large part by the Lambent Foundation Fund of Tides Foundation. This initiative provides opportunities to support and develop artists of all races, backgrounds, cultures, sexual orientations, gender identities and aesthetic traditions.

This series includes:

SUBMERGE -- an evening curated and performed by LGBTQ artists of color, directed by Dan Fishback (2010-2012 AIR), and curated by J. Mason III in partnership with awQward, the first Trans & QPOC specific talent agency.

DANCING WHILE BLACK -- curated by current AIR, Paloma McGregor, supports the current work of Black dance artists by cultivating opportunities for dialogue, documentation, process and performance.

Workshops include:

ADULT BALLEZ taught by Katy Pyle (AIR 2013-2015) and Jules Skloot (current Space Grant recipient); DANCE TO THE PEOPLE, a collective laboratory for dance teachers who seek to develop a particular dance technique, or answer specific movement questions; and ACRE (Artists Co-creating Racial Equity), a series of monthly meetings facilitated by Sarita Covington (current Parent/Artist Space Grant recipient), Nathan Trice, and Maria Bauman in affiliation with the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond that brings together artists, cultural workers, and cultural advocates to work toward understanding and undoing racism in our field and in our daily lives. Founded in 1991, BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange, is a community based performing arts center dedicated to developing artists of all ages, from children to professionals. The organization offers community access to arts and culture, supporting the creation of new work by emerging artists, engaging diverse audiences and providing arts education to youth and families. BAX has intentionally constructed an environment where children study and professional artists create under the same roof. Students are mentored by professional directors and choreographers. The organization's distinct focus on developmental process makes it a nurturing incubator for experimental dance and theater artists and is an important advocate for under-represented voices in the New York City performing arts community.
