JACK presents Naughty Daughtyr by Bailey Nolan, May 16 - 18, 2017.
Performance artist Bailey Nolan returns to JACK with her raucous troupe to present Naughty Daughtyr, a three-act story set hundreds of years in the future and draped over a landscape of pop remixes and poetic monologues. The story revolves around Mothyr, grief-stricken at the realization that her child will be sterilized, and Daughtyr, a hopeful symbol of a new world order. The spectacle -- bookmarked by video dreams -- is pregnant with Irish accents, a dance battle, children singing, Brangelina references, fog, and the spirit of Christmas. Naughty Daughtyr wails a battle cry for unity held by the generations of womyn to come.

Bailey Nolan is an energy artist based in New York City who demands your full attention. She has been hailed by the New York Times as "something Bob Mackie might have created for Carol Burnett." Using voice and dance combined with an aesthetic language all her own, Nolan transforms a space and transports her audience literally back to the present. Laced with humor and littered with pop-culture, her work has been acclaimed throughout the United States and abroad in institutions including MoMA, Deitch Projects, University of Washington, Chashama, JACK, et al. Alongside Viva Soudan, she runs Buoy, a performative dance duo which uses the political body to enforce joy, and hosts BuoyRR, an annual two-week residency and retreat intensive for womyn in Deep River, Connecticut. For three years, Nolan toured with the Ann Liv Young Dance Company, performing in over thirty productions nationally and internationally at museums and festivals including Gessneralle Zürich (Switzerland), Steirischer Herbst (Austria), Inkonst Malmö (Sweden), New York Live Arts, Joe's Pub, et al. Nolan is the founder of the avant grade post-feminist guerrilla performance collective BabySkinGlove, and the co-creator of the off-Broadway musical Katdashians! Break the Musical. More information as well as her ongoing visual collaboration with partner and photographer Charley Parden can be found at www.baileynolan.com.
JACK is an OBIE-winning performance venue founded in 2012 in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn by theater-maker Alec Duffy and several co-founders. Our mission is to create radical access to the arts by presenting performance work that reflects the diversity of the city and by involving local residents in the creative process. We present about 200 theater, music and dance performances a year and hold community forums on racial justice, gentrification, and police/community relations.
JACK's programming is made possible by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and Councilmember Laurie Cumbo, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, The DuBose and Dorothy Heyward Memorial Fund, the Mental Insight Foundation, The Lida Foundation and by The Nathan Cummings Foundation.
