BRIC Announces 15 Awardees for Inaugural ArtFP Commissioning Program

BRIC, the leading presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn, has just announced the complete list of artists awarded BRIC's new ArtFP commission. With the award, BRIC will support 15 Brooklyn and New York City-based visual artists in creating and presenting exhibitions and/or immersive installations in spaces throughout BRIC House, BRIC's arts and media complex in Downtown Brooklyn, in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

The ArtFP commissioning program is an open request for proposals that affords emerging and established visual artists the opportunity to explore and expand the possibilities of their work. BRIC has selected the inaugural awardees from approximately 250 artist submissions. Recipients will exhibit their work in the BRIC House Project Room, Café area, or Hallway, or have their work projected on the Garage Doors at the entrance to the Gallery space, between shows. BRIC will also provide time, space and technical assistance for the development, fabrication, and installation of these works, as well as marketing and promotion and an exhibition opening reception.

Currently, Juan Miguel Marin's ArtFP-supported work, part of his ongoing installation and performance series Under The Influence, is on view in the main Hallway at BRIC House through Saturday, October 22, 2017. Additional ArtFP awardees include Leigh Davis, Sophia Narrett, Kenseth Armstead, Juanli Carrion, Magali Duzant, Tatiana Arocha, Luiza Kurzyna, Leslie Kerby, Jesse Chun, Elizabeth Riley, Bradly Dever Treadaway, Nora Rodriguez, Katharine Shima, and Fernanda Mello.

Luiza Kurzyna

Luiza Kurzyna reinterprets the behavior of flora and fauna to produce wearable objects for performance and video . Her work has been shown at Glasslands Gallery and Streb Warehouse, both in Brooklyn; Denise Bibro Gallery, New York; Artspace, New Haven, Connecticut; and the New Britain Museum of American Art, Connecticut. She has received residencies and fellowships at BRIC; I-Park Foundation, East Haddam, Connecticut; and Ox-Bow, Saugatuck, Michigan. She earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, and her MFA from Brooklyn College.

Magali Duzant

Magali Duzant's work fuses the poetics of perception with a scientific approach to examining our lived experiences. Duzant has shown at Brooklyn Infusion Center; SPRING/BREAK Art Fair, 3W Group, and Fridman Gallery, all in New York; Queens Museum; Local Project and Flux Factory, both in Queens; Pelham Arts Center; and Gospel Flat, Bolinas, California. Internationally, she has been featured at Crypt Gallery, London; The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg; and Parramatta Artist Studios, Sydney. She earned her MFA in Photography from Parsons School for Design and her BHA in Fine Art & Visual Culture from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Leslie Kerby

Leslie Kerby's work employs a variety of media to explore how identity and social narratives are constructed personally and collectively. Kerby has been featured at 490 Atlantic Gallery, Norte Maar, the NARS Foundation, and BRIC House, all in Brooklyn; The Painting Center and Garvey | Simon, both in New York; and The Drawing Rooms, Jersey City, New Jersey. In addition to her artistic practice, she has assisted in curatorial endeavors for BRIC House, Brooklyn, and Project: ARTspace, New York. Kerby received her BA in American Studies from Randolph-Macon College in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Tatiana Arocha

Inspired by her childhood journeys into Colombia's rainforests with her anthropologist father, Tatiana Arocha's multidisciplinary work stems from a desire to celebrate the landscape's astounding biodiversity. Her work has been shown recently at BLDG 92, The Vazquez Building, and the SONYA Art Walk, all in Brooklyn; the Queens Botanic Garden; the Max L. Jackson Gallery, Charlotte, North Carolina; and Casa 9.69, Bogotá. She has received awards and commissions from Goethe-Institut Kolumbien, the Arquetopia Oaxaca International Artist Residency, 3x3 Magazine, The Wassaic Project, and SundanceTV. Arocha earned her BFA in Graphic Design from the Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Colombia.

Jesse Chun

Jesse Chun works in a multidisciplinary practice to investigate language, identity, and communication through symbols and information technology. Chun has been featured at Brooklyn Bridge Park; Spencer Brownstone Gallery and Bulletin, both in New York; MoMA PS1, Long Island City, New York; Newark Museum, New Jersey; ArtCenter/South Florida, Miami, Florida; and the Santa Fe Art Institute, New Mexico. She is the recipient of fellowships and grants from BRIC, Brooklyn; The New York State Council on the Arts; The New York Foundation for the Arts; and the Bronx Museum of the Arts, among others. Chun received her BFA from Parsons the New School for Design and a MFA from the School of Visual Arts, both in New York, New York.

Elizabeth Riley

Elizabeth Riley's video works address questions surrounding the complex relationship between our lived reality and its digital manifestations. Her work has been shown at BRIC, chashama, and Sideshow Gallery, all in Brooklyn; Project ARTspace and AC Institute, both in New York; and Knockdown Center, Queens. She has received fellowships from Two Tree Cultural Space and BRIC House, both in Brooklyn, and she has completed residencies in I-Park Foundation, East Haddam, Connecticut; Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, Great Cranberry Island, Maine; Anderson Center, Red Wing, Minnesota; and the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists, Reykjavik, Iceland. She received her BA from Barnard College and her MFA from Hunter College, both in New York, New York.

Bradly Dever Treadaway

Bradly Dever Treadaway uses public and private archives to create videos, installations, and photographs that investigate family history and memory, domestic rituals, and the collapse of intergenerational communication. He has shown his work at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival; the International Center for Photography, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Anthology Film Archives, all in New York; the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill, New York; Light City, Baltimore, Maryland; COOP Gallery, Nashville, Tennessee; and Ewing Gallery, Knoxville, Tennessee. His work has been featured internationally in France, Germany, Australia, and throughout Italy. Treadaway received a BFA in Media Arts at the University of Tennessee and a MFA in Photography at Louisiana State University.

Juan Miguel Marin

A visual artist and musician, Juan Miguel Marin's artistic practice transposes itself across media. Marin is an Ecuadorian artist based in Brooklyn. He earned his BA from the Savannah College of Art and Design, studying visual communications concentrating on graphic design. His work has been exhibited at the Alliance Francaise, San Jose, Costa Rica; C'Mon Everybody, Brooklyn; Dab Art, Venice, California; the New Hampshire Institute of Art Biennial; The Billboard Creative Q4, Los Angeles, California; the Costa Rica International Design Festival; and the OFFF Festival, Barcelona, Spain. He is the drummer for the indie band LEGS.

Katharine Shima

Katherine Shima's intricate and sublime landscapes blur the boundaries between the organic and the mechanical to comment on the nature of cross-cultural understanding. Shima has exhibited at Trestle Gallery, Mighty Tanaka Gallery, and Devotion Gallery, all in Brooklyn; Rush Arts Gallery and Bridge Gallery, both in New York; the Lockwood Matthews Museum, Norwalk, Connecticut; and the George Walter Vincent Art Museum, Springfield, Massachusetts. She has completed a residency at Ace Hotel, New York, and is a founding member of the electronic noise group Loud Objects. She earned her BA and her MA in Architecture from Columbia University, New York.

Fernanda Mello

A self-taught artist working primarily in painting and drawing, Fernanda Mello reinterprets folkloric culture she learned as a child growing up in Brazil. She has exhibited at Greenpoint Gallery, Brooklyn; the Fort Tilden National Recreation Area; the Regents Canal Festival and The Brick Lane Gallery, both in London; Grand Palais, Paris; Galeria Olho d'Agua, Brasilia; and FilaAC, São Paulo. She is the recipient of an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and currently resides in Brooklyn.

Leigh Davis

Working in a variety of media, Leigh Davis produces art that stems from an anthropological curiosity about human experiencE. Davis has had solo exhibitions at the Morbid Anatomy Museum, Brooklyn; Dixon Place and Hunter East Harlem Gallery, both in New York; and Clermont State Historic Site, New York. Her work has been featured at BRIC and Open Source Gallery, both in Brooklyn; the Maryland Institute of Contemporary Art, Baltimore; and the (e)merge Art Fair, Washington, D.C. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including those from The Pollination Project, The New York Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Maryland Institute of Contemporary Art. She holds a BFA in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia, and a MFA from Concordia University, Montreal.

Sophia Narrett

Sophia Narrett's embroidered fantasies take their inspiration from popular culture to explore themes of intimacy and vulnerability. Narrett's work has been shown at BRIC, Squat Gallery, and 315 Gallery, all in Brooklyn; Freight + Volume, SPRING/BREAK Art Show, and Booth Gallery, all in New York; Hunterdon Art Museum, Clinton, New Jersey; Lux Art Institute, Encinitas, California; and Museum Rijswijk, Holland. Her past residencies include those at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; the Lux Art Institute, Encinitas, California; and DNA Gallery, Provincetown, Massachusetts. She holds a BA in Visual Arts from Brown University and a MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, both in Providence, Rhode Island.

Kenseth Armstead

Kenseth Armstead is a multimedia installation artist whose work investigates the African American experience during the American Revolution and the relationship between Africa and its diasporas. Armstead has shown work at Churner and Churner, LMAKprojects, and Eyebeam Art + Technology Center, all in New York; Olana State Historic Site, Hudson, New York; and Furthermore Gallery, Washington, D.C. He has held residencies at the Brooklyn Museum; Governors Island, New York; Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens; and Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, New York, among others. Armstead received his BFA from Corcoran College of Art and Design, then attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program before earning his MA in Integrated Digital Media from the Tandon School of Engineering at New York University.

Juanli Carrión

Juanli Carrión is a multi-media artist whose work explores community, memory, and collective and individual identity through site-specific installations. Carrión has been featured at White Box and Y Gallery, both in New York; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Lima, Peru; La Conservera, Murcia, Spain; Rosa Santos Gallery, Valencia, Spain; and Rum46, Arthus, Denmark. His public gardens have been installed in Brooklyn; Manhattan; the Bronx; Holma, Sweden; and Valencia and Murcia, both in Spain. Carrión is the recipient of numerous grants, including those from the Brooklyn Arts Council; Partnerships for Parks; and the Ministry of Culture of Spain. He received his BA in New Media Arts from Universite Vicennes-Saint Denis, Paris, and his BFA in Fine Arts from Universidad de Granada, Spain. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Sculpture at the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia, Spain.

Nora Rodriguez

Nora Rodriguez's hand-drawn animation technique plays on the physical comedy of early animation to explore routines and repetitive actions in daily life. In addition to her artistic practice, she has curated shows at Blackburn 20?20, New York, and Root Division, San Francisco, California. Rodriguez has completed residencies at The Museum of the Moving Image, Queens; the Queens Museum; and Magic Box Productions, Pleasantville, New York. Rodriguez received her BA from Columbia University.
