Award winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez will sing Broadway melodies to support musical theatre scholarships at the 3rd annual Brooklyn Children's Theatre's SPRING SING on Monday, April 24, 2017. Kristen, an Oscar and Grammy winner, co-wrote Broadway's first a capella show, In Transit. Bobby, co-creator of Book of Mornon and Avenue Q, is the youngest ever person to win an EGOT - Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. The pair are currently adapting their hit film Frozen for Broadway release in Spring, 2018.
The Lopezes will be joined by a host of other Broadway veterans and student performers singing songs that inspire them. The event will take place at the Shapeshifter Lab (18 Whitwell Place @ 1st Street) in Gowanus, Brooklyn from 7 - 10 PM.
Alongside performances will be a silent auction and live auction including television and theatre tickets, fine art, a New Orleans vacation home, and VIP sports ticket packages. A limited number of SPRING SING tickets are still available.
Since its founding in 2004, Brooklyn Children's Theatre has served thousands of youth and teens, including hundreds of low-income youth and some living in family shelters. BCT'S SPRING SING supports scholarships to bring the art of theatre to many youth who would otherwise not have access to musical theatre training.
SPRING SING will also feature Broadway star Nancy Anderson, currently Glenn Close's understudy for Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard; Willy Falk, who originated Chris in Miss Saigon; Tyley Ross who was Lord Cannan in Finding Neverland; and Jim Stanek, also known as Bruce in Fun Home. Student performers will include Jackson Demott Hill (Finding Neverland), Sophia Davis, Mariah Hill, and Novahliz Tejada.
Aizzah Fatima (High Maintenance, The Good Wife) and Diana Kazakova (Godspell, The King and I), along with student performers, will sing "All American." The original song is from The Ten Year Test produced through BCT's Muslim Voices program, which unites students and teachers to write and perform musical theatre that highlight Muslim culture. BCT Brooklyn Children's Theatre Inc provides youth with a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment to discover and hone their talents and life skills through the collaborative art of musical theatre.
Through the rehearsal process students learn discipline, respect, and the value of hard work and a positive attitude. Through ensemble work, students build a strong community in which they learn commitment, trust, and how to depend on one another. Through live performances, students develop confidence and learn to take risks.
