On Wednesday, May 29, beginning at 11 a.m., applications will be accepted for Ingersoll Senior Residences. Located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Ingersoll Senior Residences will be the largest LGBT-friendly elder housing development in the country and the first in New York City and State.
The building, developed by SAGE and BFC Partners, is expected to open in fall 2019. It will comprise 17 stories holding 145 apartments, three outdoor terraces, and a state-of-the-art SAGE Center on the ground floor that will provide health and cultural programs, meal service, and a computer lab. The application is online only; applicants will have the option to apply online or in person at any SAGE Center in the New York City area. Applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis.
The need for LGBT-friendly housing for older people is vital, given the high levels of housing discrimination that LGBT elders face. The timing is purposeful and significant: Opening this development 50 years after the Stonewall uprising honors the Stonewall generation and ensures that they have access to the housing they need to age with the dignity and respect they deserve.
