What Will the Neighbors Say? has announced their new Board of Directors ahead of their Eight Season (2023-2024). The five-person Board is composed entirely of working theater professionals, all of whom are frequent collaborators of the company. The new members - Thalia Romina (she/her/hers), Coral Cohen (she/her/hers), Shani Matoaka Bekt (she/her/hers), Jacqueline Scaletta (she/her/hers) and Devante Lawrence (he/him/his) - formally joined the governance of the company back in July, and will form a core element of the Neighbors' outreach and capacity building over the coming year and beyond. More information on each of these members can be found on the Neighbors' website.
The Co-Artistic Directors - Sam Hood Adrain (he/him/his) and James Clements (he/him/his) - are honoured to welcome this dynamic group into the fold. They represent the wide range of friends and collaborators of the company: Romina is an actor and comedian, Cohen is a director, writer and devisor, Bekt is an actor, dancer, choreographer, movement director, singer and writer, Scaletta is a designer, writer and performer and Lawrence is an actor and writer. All of them are longterm collaborators of the company and have a deep understanding of the Neighbors and their values. Romina will act as Chairperson, with Cohen as Vice Chairperson, Lawrence as Treasurer, Scaletta as Secretary and Bekt as Neighbor-at-Large.
Of the appointments, Co-Artistic Director Hood Adrain shared, "[It] is such a privilege to have these incredible artists as part of our leadership team, each of whom we know well as colleagues, friends and fantastic artists in their own right." "The diversity, variety and wide range of perspectives offered by these phenomenal citizen-artists is such an honour to experience, and we know having an all-artist Board, strongly aligned with our own values, is essential to our company's impact and growth," added Clements.
What Will the Neighbors Say? is an investigative theatre company that provokes questions through untold stories. Led by a collaborative cohort of International Artists, the Neighbors present overlooked social, cultural and historical narratives that challenge the audience to reflect on the current moment. Through a combination of original plays, arts education workshops and dynamic community gatherings, the troupe incites rowdy and rigorous debate at the theatre and throughout the Neighborhood.
