Queensland Youth Symphony (QYO) presents an evening full of light and illumination.
The program begins with the world premiere of a new work by Australian composer Carl Vine.
Respighi’s The Sunset, written for strings and soprano, is based on the text of a poem written by Percy Bysshe Shelley. The poignant work reflects on the mingling of love and death, the power of grief, the longing for rest, and the effects of time. With Soprano Lisa Gasteen, the strings of the Queensland Youth Symphony present this evocative work.
Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, the mischievous tone poem by Richard Strauss, features the QYS horn and clarinet assuming the roles of the impish trickster. The program ends with Respighi’s Church Windows, depicting the events contained in brilliant Italian stained glass windows. The work is full of grandeur and wonder, with Respighi’s orchestration adding subtle colours.
