Mahler Symphony No.4
Mahler Das Lied von der Erde
Never before have these two works by Mahler been paired in a concert in Australia. These are some of Mahler’s greatest utterances, his signature and swan song to the world he knew.
The youthful soul of the fourth symphony concludes with the lyrical soprano voice telling of heaven. Later, Mahler created his masterpiece, Das Lied von der Erde, using ancient texts from the T’ang Dynasty. It is a deeply human vision of the edges and boundaries of human life, reflecting the dualism of day and night, winter and summer, life and death. The tenor sings in glorious drunkeness, the mezzo is introspective, wistful and knowing about the departure of life.
This is a concert that will resonate long after the music has ended.
"Simone Young’s penetrating vision sparked a fresh orchestral sound, pioneered new insight and discovery ... the performance was gloriously wilful; the instrumental forces sharply focused." Limelight Magazine on QSO and Simone Young performing Mahler's Symphony No.1
