A musical play within a play, Kiss Me, Kate is set among a theatre troupe performing the Bard's The Taming of the Shrew.
With a cheeky nod to the 2016 global Shakespeare celebrations, OperaQ is delighted to present the great Cole Porter's multi- award-winning musical Kiss Me, Kate.
Directed by Fred Graham, the show's star, is at war with his fiery leading lady (and ex-wife) Lilli Vanessi, whose bittersweet relationship results in glorious musical numbers including Wunderbar, So In Love and I Hate Men. Since winning the very first Tony Award for Best Musical in 1949, Kiss Me, Kate has stayed beloved worldwide for Porter's charming songs and lyrics and its backstage storyline involving an ambitious showgirl, her jealous boyfriend (Why Can't You Behave?), fabulous dance numbers (Too Darn Hot) and two adorable gangsters who fall in love with showbiz (Brush Up Your Shakespeare).
And who better for the roles of Fred and Lilli than Australia's opera royalty - and real-life husband and wife – Peter Coleman-Wright and Cheryl Barker? They will be joined by a sensational cast of opera and music theatre stars including the irrepressible Jason Barry-Smith and the multi- talented Bryan Probets with the fabulous Opera Queensland Chorus and Queensland Symphony Orchestra. This will mark the first time in almost 20 years that Cole Porter's much-loved musical will be performed at the Concert Hall, QPAC.
If you enjoyed the lush orchestra-on-stage experience of Candide, join us for Kiss Me, Kate - a wonderful, upbeat way to round off your 2016 OperaQ season.
