Brisbane audiences will be treated to Mozart's much loved opera The Marriage of Figaro tonight, September 8 through the 14th at the Queensland Conservatorium Theatre in South Bank.

A young and talented cast of opera students will present this comic opera about marriage, relationships, infidelity, infatuation and lasting commitment in four performances.

According to Director Anna Sweeney, AM, The Marriage of Figaro is to opera students what Shakespeare is to acting students and Swan Lake to classical dance students.

"The major classics are what hone the talents of all emerging artists," she says.

"We expect that one day these students will be performing these same roles in the profession throughout Australia and abroad."

Principal performers include Joshua Rowe (Figaro), Morgan Balfour and Ashleigh Crane (Susanna), Samuel Johnson and Daniel Smerdon (Count), Tabatha McFadyen and Stephanie Lloyd (Countess), and Amanda Windred (Marcellina).

Against a background of political strife and the dawning of the French Revolution, the opera explores the ancient nobility right of the Count to take the virginity of the young newlywed maiden first, before her husband on the night of her wedding.

Figaro, Susanna and the Countess then conspire to thwart his plans and ensure that everyone ends up with the right partner.

Each character and situation within the story is captured with such wit and irony that the piece is often described as the 'perfect' opera.

For its annual opera production, the Queensland Conservatorium has enlisted the expert assistance of renowned language coaches Teresa Desmarchelier and Jillianne Stoll and costume designer Gayle MacGregor.

Performances:

3.00pm, Sunday 8 September
6.30pm, Tuesday 10 September
7.30pm, Thursday 12 September
7.30pm, Saturday 14 September
