Capturing a moment in history the new FREE exhibition in the Tony Gould Gallery, Queensland Performing Arts Centre entitled La Stupenda and Friends looks back at the growth of opera in Brisbane and Dame Joan Sutherland's most acclaimed roles.

Currently open and running until 24 November 2012, La Stupenda and Friends features costumes from the QPAC Museum collection which were worn by Sutherland in the roles of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor and the doomed courtesan Violetta in La Traviata.

The exhibition relives the glamour and excitement of Sutherland's triumphant return to Australia in the roles that catapulted her to global stardom and features costumes, original designs, photographs and memorabilia to explore the remarkable art form of opera.

La Stupenda and Friends celebrates the growth of opera in Brisbane since Sutherland's landmark season at Her Majesty's Theatre in October 1965. The exhibition showcases the local companies that responded to a reinvigorated audience demand at this time and the Queensland artists who have made a career in opera since this time.

La Stupenda and Friends, also pays special attention to Brisbane-born singer Margreta Elkins, a friend and professional colleague of Sutherland's, whose career also took her around the world.

La Stupenda and Friends exhibits opera at its best, combining the elements of music, design and performance of the highest level.
