Local Queensland musical theatre stars of tomorrow will receive valuable showbiz tips direct from an award-winning Broadway star in Brisbane next month as part of an initiative of Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).
Twenty-seven 3rd Year Bachelor of Musical Theatre degree students at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University will participate in masterclasses and workshops from 9 to 12 October 2017 led by Emmy® Award winning and Tony® Award nominated Broadway performer Liz Callaway (Cats, Miss Saigon, Merrily We Roll Along, Baby) and musical director and composer Alex Rybeck (Merrily We Roll Along, Damn Yankees). Leading Australian musical theatre identity ShaRon Millerchip (Phantom of the Opera, Beauty & The Beast, Chicago, Love Never Dies), fresh from being Resident Director on Disney's Aladdin in Melbourne; and assistant musical director and accompanist Heidi Loveland, will also impart their skills and experience during the week.
Liz Callaway and Alex Rybeck will share their years of experience, from starring in major productions and performing with singing legends like Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder, to gracing the stages of the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, with the budding musical theatre and cabaret stars. The masterclasses and workshops will take place ahead of the pair's Queensland debut; An Evening with Liz Callaway in QPAC's Cremorne Theatre on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October 2017.
Following an intense week of honing their musical theatre skills, the students will present a special performance of cabaret and musical theatre - The Sky's the Limit: Student Cabaret Showcase, in QPAC's newly refurbished Cremorne Theatre for one performance only on Thursday 12 October 2017.
The workshop will focus on how students can create their own one-person cabaret show. Classes will include audition techniques, selecting repertoire and general performance technique, culminating in the showcase performance in front of a live audience.
For the past three years the talented students have been training within the prestigious full time Bachelor of Musical Theatre course at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. During the course audiences will have seen them perform in musicals such asThe Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Sweet Charity, Elegies, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change and most recently their acclaimed production of West Side Story.
Recent graduates from the course have gone on to appear in many major professional musical productions in Australia includingLes Misérables, Disney's Aladdin, Green Day's American Idiot, Cats, The Light in the Piazza, Merrily We Roll Along, and soon in the new musical based on singer-songwriter Carole King, Beautiful - The Carole King Musical. Two graduates each year are also selected for guest roles in QPAC's annual Spirit of Christmas concerts.
Two students will be selected during the masterclass week for the special opportunity to perform in guests spots during An Evening with Liz Callaway on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October 2017.
